Digital signage is more in keeping with the way people live nowadays. You’re bringing the message to the people, instead of expecting them to walk over and read a bulletin board.
- Taryn Casey, sales and marketing manager, David Lloyd Riverview
Company Profile
David Lloyd Riverview is Dublin’s premier health and fitness membership club, situated on the beautiful banks of the Dodder river in Clonskeagh. A complete ‘lifestyle club’, David Lloyd Riverview offers expertly trained fitness instructors and a comprehensive array of amenities including indoor and outdoor heated pools, spa baths, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, adult and family dining rooms, hair and beauty salon, and much more. Not forgetting the kids, the club offers a crèche and kids’ club, teen room and cinema.
When Taryn Casey joined David Lloyd Riverview as their sales and marketing manager, her first challenge was to improve the quality of communications to their almost 10,000 members. Her primary goal was to use improved communication to increase the levels of member retention – always an issue for fitness centres – by making them feel a part of a club.
The solution presented itself when Casey attending a marketing exhibition showcasing Digital Signage displays at the RDS in Dublin.
Taryn Casey – ‘As soon as I saw it I knew it was the solution I was looking for,’ she says. ‘Even though I didn’t fully understand what it was all about, these really dynamic screens were obviously how I wanted to communicate to our members.’
Seven screens were installed screens in high traffic areas around the club, all controlled from a central computer. The system also integrated five existing televisions, which generally are tuned to broadcast stations, but can instantly be switched to David Lloyd Riverview’s in-house channel at any time. This way, they could reach virtually everyone with important messages such as scheduling changes, special offers, etc.
‘It’s just brilliant!’ says administrator Nicola Cullen, who uses the system on a daily basis. ‘No matter how jazzy you try to make a poster, people will just walk past. This is so much more dynamic. When we first installed this system, we had kids crowding around the screens. They didn’t want to go swimming; they just wanted to watch the cartoons!’
Casey concurs. ‘The screens are a great way to communicate club activities,’ she says, ‘because by using dynamic methods such as digital footage, Flash, etc, people take much more notice than they would with a static medium like a poster.’
